Non-invasive methods for analysing pig welfare biomarkersReviewM Svoboda, M Nemeckova, D Medkova, L Sardi, N HodkovicovaVet Med - Czech, 2024, 69(5):137-155 | DOI: 10.17221/17/2024-VETMED At present, the assessment of pig welfare quality has gained significant importance, prompting the exploration of novel biomarkers for this purpose. Traditionally, these biomarkers have been monitored in the blood; however, blood sampling is considered an invasive procedure. Currently, non-invasive methods for collecting samples are emerging as viable alternatives for assessing these biomarkers. This article aims to present the current knowledge regarding the use of non-invasive methods for analysing pig welfare biomarkers, specifically focusing on the saliva, hair, faeces, and urine as matrices to determine these biomarkers. The saliva analysis encompasses various biomarkers, such as cortisol, alpha-amylase, chromogranin A, the total esterase, oxytocin, acute phase proteins, adenosine deaminase, immunoglobulins and parameters of redox homeostasis. Cortisol, a specific biomarker, can be determined in the hair, urine and faeces, while urine samples allow for the analysis of catecholamines as non-invasive markers of pig welfare. |
Comprehensive comparative study of Chiari-like malformation in veterinary and human medicineReviewJH Jung, H Park, WS Kim, HY YoonVet Med - Czech, 2024, 69(7):217-233 | DOI: 10.17221/125/2023-VETMED This review aims to enrich our understanding of Chiari-like malformation (CLM) by combining human and veterinary insights, and providing a detailed cross-species overview. CLM is a developmental abnormality characterised by caudal displacement of the hindbrain into the foramen magnum due to an entire brain parenchymal shift caused by insufficient skull volume. This malformation leads to a progressive obstruction at the craniocervical junction, which disrupts the normal cerebrospinal fluid flow, leading to secondary syringomyelia. The clinical signs of CLM and syringomyelia include phantom scratching, head tilt, head tremor, ataxia, tetraparesis, pain, muscle atrophy, and scoliosis or torticollis. Magnetic resonance imaging remains the gold standard for diagnosing CLM, since it allows the visualisation of abnormal findings such as the caudal cerebellar herniation, caudal cerebellar compression from occipital dysplasia, and attenuated cerebrospinal fluid cisternae. Although various medical and surgical interventions, including foramen magnum decompression, can provide temporary symptomatic/clinical sign relief, current literature shows a lack of sustained long-term efficacy. Therefore, additional research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of existing treatment strategies and to compare different techniques utilised in conjunction with foramen magnum decompression. |
Biochemical and antioxidant responses of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to sublethal concentrations of the antiepileptic and analgesic drug gabapentinOriginal PaperJ Blahova, P Mikula, P Marsalek, Z SvobodovaVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(1):20-29 | DOI: 10.17221/75/2024-VETMED The present study aimed to evaluate the biochemical and antioxidant responses of common carp after exposure to the antiepileptic and analgesic drug gabapentin at concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 μg/l for 4 weeks. The exposure to the highest two concentrations resulted in significant changes in plasma indices such as glucose (only group 100 μg/l), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lipase, creatine kinase (CK), amylase as well as butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). Similar trends were found in both groups exposed to the environmentally relevant concentrations (i.e., 0.1 and 1 μg/l). In addition, a significant increase in the ferric-reducing power of the plasma was noted in all treated groups. Numerous changes in antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, as well as lipid peroxidation, were observed especially in the caudal kidney in the group exposed to 100 μg/l. Significant findings were also confirmed in the group exposed to an environmentally relevant concentration (1 μg/l), with a decrease in superoxide dismutase in the gill and an increased lipoperoxidation in the caudal kidney. Our research shows that subchronic exposure to gabapentin may pose a significant risk to non-target aquatic organisms, such as disruption of metabolic pathways or induction of oxidative stress, even at environmentally relevant concentrations. |

Claw diseases are the dominant cause of lameness in dairy cows and a risk factor for mastitisOriginal PaperV Hisira, J Zahumenska, M Kadasi, R Klein, P Mudron, F ZigoVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(2):35-44 | DOI: 10.17221/56/2024-VETMED Lameness and mastitis are two of the most economically important issues for the dairy industry. This study aimed to obtain a clearer analysis of the link between mastitis and lameness in dairy cows using the Mastitis Score and detecting the pathogens that predominate in dairy cows’ milk samples with claw diseases. During routine claw trimming, milk samples were collected from dairy cows in two Slovak dairy farms. Out of 558 cows presented for claw trimming, 144 cows (25.8%) exhibited lameness from claw diseases. The most prevalent disease in our study was digital dermatitis (43.1%), followed by toe necrosis (41.7%), and Rusterholz ulcer (15.3%). Udder inflammation in clinical form was diagnosed based on clinical examination of individual udder quarters, and sensory evaluation of milk from each quarter and in the subclinical form by the CMT. Mastitis was detected in 80 cows with claw diseases, clinical mastitis in 14 cows (17.5%), and subclinical mastitis in 66 cows (82.5%). On both farms, Mastitis Scores were significantly higher in dairy cows affected by claw diseases than in the non-lame ones. In mastitic cows affected by claw diseases, environmental pathogens dominated the infected milk samples. Our findings showed that cows with claw disease were more likely to have mastitis. |
Prevalence and risk factors of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia infestation in cattle and in broiler chickens in AlgeriaOriginal PaperR Baazizi, M Taibi, N Senouci, D Baroudi, S Khodja, R Belala, D Khelef, N MimouneVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(2):68-76 | DOI: 10.17221/82/2024-VETMED Cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis are zoonotic protozoan diseases with significant public health and economic concerns. In Algeria, epidemiological data on these parasites in livestock are limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia in dairy calves and broiler chickens and to identify the associated risk factors. A microscopic analysis of 200 faecal samples revealed a Cryptosporidium spp. prevalence of 56% in calves and 60% in broiler chickens, while the Giardia prevalence was 8% in calves and absent in chickens. In cattle, the data showed that age constituted a potential risk factor for both parasites (P < 0.000 1 for Cryptosporidium; P < 0.000 5 for Giardia). Interestingly, the risk of a Cryptosporidium infection decreased with age, while the Giardia infestation risk increased. The sex was not a significant factor for Cryptosporidium (P = 0.115 0), but was impactful for Giardia (P < 0.000 1), with males at higher risk. These results highlighted the distinct epidemiological characteristics of Cryptosporidium and Giardia infestations in Algerian livestock. The contrasting age-related risks and sex-specific susceptibility to Giardia underline the need for targeted, age and sex prevention strategies. This study provides valuable data to inform public health policies and to improve livestock management practices in Algeria, contributing to the wider understanding of these zoonotic parasites in North African agricultural farming. |
The effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the oxidative stress, caspase-3, cytokine and immunity in ratsOriginal PaperM Gultekin, M Eren, FD Koca, CK Bozbek, N DeveliVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(10):379-392 | DOI: 10.17221/11/2025-VETMED This study was conducted to examine the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, superoxidase dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and caspase-3 (CASP3) activities, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), immunoglobulin (Ig) E, G, M and zinc (Zn) concentrations in the serum/plasma and liver tissues of rats. Forty Wistar Albino rats were separated into five equal groups as the control, 5 and 10 mg/kg, b.w./day ZnO, 5 and 10 mg/kg b.w./day ZnO NPs were administered i.p. every other day for 14 days. The plasma MDA and plasma/liver TNF-α concentrations increased in the 10 mg/kg ZnO, 5 and 10 mg/kg ZnO NPs groups. The plasma SOD, CASP3, plasma/liver GPx activities and serum Zn concentrations increased in all the Zn groups. The highest SOD, GPx and CASP3 activities were detected in the 5 mg/kg ZnO NPs group. The plasma IgG concentrations increased, especially in the ZnO NPs groups. The study findings suggest that 5 mg/kg ZnO NPs could potentially have an ameliorative effect on the possible adverse effects of oxidative stress. These nanoparticles demonstrate their ability to combat oxidative stress by increasing the plasma/tissue SOD, GPx, and CASP3 activities, TNF-α, and IgG concentrations. However, the effectiveness of the nanoparticles may vary depending on the synthesis method, application time, and concentration. |

Environmental DNA (eDNA) contamination patterns of African swine fever virus (ASFV) in swine transport vehicles in the PhilippinesOriginal PaperMJ Bartolome, LAM Aguirre, CM Poliquit, I Besas, JG Angeles, J Rabajante, S Camba, F Del Valle, A Ambrocio, F Caguicla, MG Bustamante, D UmaliVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(5):156-165 | DOI: 10.17221/84/2024-VETMED Since its introduction in 2019, African swine fever (ASF) has spread to all regions of the Philippines, affecting 73 out of its 82 provinces. To assess the environmental DNA (eDNA) contamination patterns of the ASF virus (ASFV) in swine transport vehicles and evaluate its measures of association, a total of 450 environmental swabs from 30 transportation vehicles were tested using qPCR. Five out of 30 vehicles (16.67%) tested positive in at least one of the following areas: cargo area or sidecar walls (6.67%), cargo area or sidecar floors (6.67%), hauling personnel’s hands (6.67%), steering wheel or handlebars (3.33%), gear shift levers (3.33%), floor mats or footpegs (3.33%), dashboards (3.33%), door handles or sidecar gate bolts (3.33%), tyres/wheels (3.33%), fenders (3.33%), and hauling personnel’s footwear (3.33%). All investigated risk factors were analysed using Chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, and odds ratio and were found to be insignificant, including the frequency of swine transportation per week, frequency of cleaning per week, cleaning materials used, disinfection practices, the number of pigs transported, and whether hauliers owned pigs (p > 0.05). This study illuminates the environmental contamination patterns of ASFV in swine transport vehicles, underscoring the need for targeted biosecurity protocols in areas with a high risk of contamination, particularly the cabin areas. More effective vehicle disinfection systems that will not damage equipment or pose health risks to hauliers are recommended to reduce the risk of ASF disease transmission between countries and geographic regions. |

Uveodermatological syndrome in dogs: A review of diagnosis, management, and ophthalmic patient needsReviewP Zubricky, A Balicka, Z Drahovska, M Lapsanska, A TrbolovaVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(6):185-195 | DOI: 10.17221/10/2025-VETMED Uveodermatological syndrome is a widely recognised disease that continues to raise significant concern among both veterinarians and pet owners. Its aetiology, although still unclear, is believed to involve an autoimmune origin and genetic predisposition. The most common clinical signs include skin depigmentation, alopecia, poliosis, and, most frequently, granulomatous panuveitis. Affected dogs often develop secondary complications owing to persistent intraocular inflammation, such as cataracts and glaucoma. Although immunosuppressive therapy often yields a favourable response, recurrence is commonly observed. In some cases, uveodermatological syndrome presents a clinical challenge, as patients may experience adverse effects from medications, without which irreversible blindness may ensue. |
Antioxidant and cytokine modulation in PCOS rats protected with probiotics, myo-inositol, and herbal extractsOriginal PaperAA Zaki, NM Alharbi, TI Almundarij, SM AlbarrakVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(6):203-217 | DOI: 10.17221/116/2024-VETMED This study investigated the pathophysiology of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and evaluated the protective effects of various treatments in immature female Wistar rats (N = 48). The rats were divided into 6 groups: Olive oil injection (negative control, G1); testosterone propionate (TP)-induced PCOS (G2); probiotic + TP (G3); myo-inositol (myo-ins) + TP (G4); U. dioica extract + TP (G5); W. somnifera extract + TP (G6). The body weight, body weight gain, and percentage gain were measured weekly and then transformed using the base-10 logarithm (log10). TNF-α, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-17 were weekly measured using ELISA kits. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) were analysed in the serum and liver extracts. The W. somnifera significantly reduced the TNF-α levels (P < 0.01). The probiotic and myo-ins significantly elevated the IL-10 levels (P < 0.01). Both plant extracts moderately restored the IL-10 levels. The probiotic and U. dioica administration significantly reduced the IL-17 levels (P < 0.01). The W. somnifera administration also decreased the IL-17 levels, though the effect was less pronounced than that of U. dioica. The probiotic, myo-ins, and W. somnifera groups exhibited enhanced CAT activity (P < 0.05). W. somnifera showed significant increases in the SOD and GSH-Px activities (P < 0.01), showing the most dramatic improvement. The use of these four treatments as a monotherapy in this study resulted in different changes. Therefore, further investigation is necessary to evaluate the protective effects of combining duos or trios of these treatments against this disease. |

Deficits in social communication and interaction and repetitive, stereotyped patterns of behaviour characterise ASD. The aetiology of ASD is unclear, but several genetic and environmental risk factors, either alone or in combination, are implicated in its development. To date, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of ASD remain incompletely understood due to its heterogeneity. To better understand the pathogenesis of ASD, various animal models have been developed. The use of animals in ASD research allows the exploration of the biological substrates of social behaviour, cognition, and reward sensitivity, which are key components of ASD symptoms. This review outlines the commonly employed animal models in ASD research and explores their applications and the associated challenges. |

Toxicity of oxalic acid and its toxic effect on antioxidative enzymes in honey bee larvaeOriginal PaperT Majchrak, M Ratvaj, L Sabova, J Toporcak, L MolnarVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(7):261-271 | DOI: 10.17221/18/2025-VETMED The production of food of plant origin is critically dependent on the pollination ability of honey bees, whose health has been deteriorating for a long time, and whose population is declining. In our in vivo experiment on a honey bee brood at the 4-day larval stage, we tested the following concentrations of oxalic acid: 0% (control – applied distilled water), 0.87%, 1.75%, 3.5% and 7%, corresponding to doses of 0 mg, 2.61 mg, 5.25 mg, 10.5 mg, and 21 mg of oxalic acid per dm2 of honeycomb with the brood. The LC50 values (72 h) ranged between 3.17% and 3.33%. The different LC50 values obtained resulted from three different methods used to calculate this indicator. The therapeutic index (TI) of oxalic acid was set to be 1.1, indicating a high risk to the honey bee brood. We observed an increased gene expression for the detoxifying enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST), but did not detect an increased gene expression for superoxide dismutase (SOD1 and SOD2), which protects the organism from oxidative stress. A decrease in gene expression was observed for prophenoloxidase and hymenoptaecin, while defensin and lysozyme did not show significant changes. These results emphasise the need for the accurate dosage and application of oxalic acid in the treatment of varroosis. |
Cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of etoposide and ellagic acid alone or with possible synergistic/additive combinations on a canine D-17 osteosarcoma cell lineOriginal PaperGS Ekren Asici, F Kiral, A Bildik, PA UlutasVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(8):279-293 | DOI: 10.17221/24/2025-VETMED Osteosarcoma (OSA) is the most prevalent and aggressive malignancy of canine bones. Etoposide is an effective chemotherapeutic agent for cancer treatment, whereas ellagic acid is a naturally occurring compound with antioxidant and anticancer properties; however, both are inhibitors of the topoisomerase enzyme. In this study, the synergistic/additive effect of etoposide, known to have a growth-inhibitory impact in canine osteosarcoma (OSA) cells, and ellagic acid was investigated. The mechanism by which this effect inhibits cell growth at lower etoposide doses was also examined. The IC₅₀ values of both agents were determined, and possible combination doses were generated accordingly and applied to canine OSA cells. The apoptotic effects of the combinations were evaluated based on DNA breaks and the activity levels of caspase 3, 8, and 9. These findings were supported by the expression levels of Bcl-2, Bax, and Bid genes, as well as the AO/EtBr staining method. The effects on cell cycle and proliferation were analysed through survivin and NF-κβ gene expressions. Antimetastatic effects were determined using invasion and migration assays. EA is a potential therapeutic agent for cancer treatment. In combination with ET, a higher anticancer efficacy was demonstrated compared to etoposide alone. Potential treatment side effects can be reduced by enabling the use of lower drug doses. |
Prevalence of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae and association with hip dysplasia in Rhodesian Ridgebacks in GermanyOriginal PaperSK Slunsky, P Slunsky, E Fort, L BrunnbergVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(10):369-378 | DOI: 10.17221/30/2025-VETMED Congenital anomalies affecting the spinal column are frequently observed in certain dog breeds. One such condition occurs at the junction between the lower back and the sacrum, where vertebrae exhibit mixed structural characteristics. This retrospective study analysed imaging records of Rhodesian Ridgebacks collected over 28 years, selecting only those that met strict positioning standards for evaluation. A total of 2 012 cases were analysed using established classification methods, identifying three distinct structural variations: a typical junction, a bilaterally altered morphology, and an asymmetrical form affecting one side. The prevalence of these variations was 7.4%, with symmetrical alterations found in 5% of cases and asymmetrical alterations in 2.4%. Statistical analysis did not reveal a significant association between these anatomical variations and canine hip dysplasia (CHD) (P = 0.170 0). These findings support previous research indicating that there is no direct link between these structural variations and joint disorders in this breed. The study represents the most extensive investigation of its kind in this canine population, highlighting that such vertebral variations are frequently observed in routine radiographic screenings, but despite decades of research, consistent clinical correlations remain elusive – underscoring the need for further systematic investigation. |
Coagulation profile in bitches with pyometra: Standard tests and thromboelastographyOriginal PaperA Ramesova, K Machackova, I Vanova, M Lacinova, A Bartoskova, R Novotny, R Vitasek, K Rehakova, J DoubekVet Med - Czech, 2025, 70(11):408-416 | DOI: 10.17221/16/2025-VETMED This study aimed to determine coagulation changes in bitches with pyometra based on a series of coagulation tests and thromboelastography (TEG), and to assess the incidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Eighteen bitches with pyometra and thirty-four control bitches were examined. Haematological, biochemical, and following haemostasis parameters were measured, including: prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), antithrombin activity (AT), and levels of fibrinogen (FBG), d-dimers (DD), tissue factor (TF), plasminogen (PLG), tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (TPAI-1), and thromboelastography. DIC was considered present if three or more of these parameters were abnormal: platelet count (<153 × 109/l), PT (>8.1 s), aPTT (>25.5 s), FBG (<0.6 g/l), DD (>0.2 mg/l), and AT (<107%). Significant differences were found in the PT, aPTT, FBG, DD, TPAI-1, clotting time, α-angle, and maximal amplitude. According to our scoring system, two patients were DIC positive. The study found alterations in several coagulation tests and hypercoagulable TEG tracings in bitches with pyometra, which point to excessive activation of coagulation, delayed fibrinolysis, and the presence of DIC. No patient bled abnormally, which may suggest that DIC is not overt in the majority of pyometra patients. |

Bovine mastitis: Risk factors and isolation of Gram-negative bacteria in Western AlgeriaOriginal PaperC Bounoua, D Souna, MEA Bekara, I Belabdi, M Sebaihia, N MimouneVet Med - Czech, 2026, 71(2):54-61 | DOI: 10.17221/40/2025-VETMED A cross-sectional study was conducted in western Algeria between February and October 2024, aimed at determining the prevalence of bovine mastitis, Gram-negative bacilli, and their associated risk factors. A total of 524 cows were sampled using clinical examination and the California mastitis test. Milk samples from the affected quarter were subjected to bacteriological assays. Three generalised linear mixed models were used to identify the risk factors for clinical mastitis (CM) and subclinical mastitis (SCM), as well as Gram-negative bacilli isolates associated with bovine mastitis. Model selection was performed using the Akaike information criterion. The prevalence of mastitis was 59.7% at the cow level, of which 12.6% was CM and 47.14% SCM. Overall, 65.5% of the mastitis cows showed a positive culture for Gram-negative bacilli. The most commonly isolated bacteria were Escherichia spp. (44%), Klebsiella spp. (23.1%), and Pseudomonas spp. (11.6%). The parity, contact with visitors, and daily milk yield (l/day) were identified as risk factors for SCM in dairy cows. However, foremilk discarding reduced the risk of developing SCM. A history of mastitis, udder injuries, udder and leg hygiene scores, and parity were identified as risk factors for CM. Nevertheless, none of the variables examined were risk factors for an udder infection by the Gram-negative bacilli isolates. |
Oral efficacy of controlled-release doxycycline against Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infestation in salmonidsOriginal PaperZ Mikulkova, K Matejickova, J Motlova, P Ginterova, M Jerabek, L PojezdalVet Med - Czech, 2026, 71(4):139-146 | DOI: 10.17221/104/2025-VETMED Ichthyophthiriosis, caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, is a major threat in salmonid aquaculture. This study evaluated the efficacy of orally administered standard doxycycline and controlled-release doxycycline formulations in experimentally infected brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). Fish received medicated feed for 10 days starting seven days post-infection. Controlled-release doxycycline achieved the highest survival rate (84.2%), followed by standard doxycycline (73.7%), while no control fish survived after day 25 post-infection. Both drug formulations eliminated trophonts from the skin and gills by 20 days post-treatment. Despite a 2.5-fold lower dietary dose, the controlled-release doxycycline achieved a tissue concentration equivalent to ~32% of that of standard doxycycline, with similar retention rates. Levels of doxycycline residues in water declined over time for both groups, indicating limited environmental release. These results demonstrate the effective mitigation of ichthyophthiriosis with orally administered doxycycline and the enhancement of antiparasitic efficacy and reduction of drug load in tissues and the environment via controlled-release technology, supporting its potential as a sustainable medicated feed strategy in salmonid aquaculture. |

In order to study host-pathogen interactions and design preventive strategies, it is essential to prepare a reliable experimental infection model. The aim of this study was to develop a reproducible immersion challenge model for E. tarda infection in C. gariepinus. The present study consisted of preliminary experiments and a main experiment evaluating the different routes of infection and the bacterial concentrations and exposure durations in an immersion bath. Preliminary experiments demonstrated that infection could be induced by either intraperitoneal injection or immersion bath, and that infection was more successful at higher concentrations. The main experiment involved two concentrations (108 and 2 × 108 CFU/ml) of immersion bath and two immersion durations (1 and 2 h), each repeated twice. The fish were monitored for clinical signs and mortality throughout the experiment and samples were collected on day 10 post-infection for haematological, immunological, and pathological assessment. High-dose immersion reliably induced infection, with disease progression depending on bacterial concentration and exposure duration. This established model is a practical and reproducible tool for future studies on the pathogenesis and immunity of C. gariepinus, as well as the use of immunostimulants and therapeutics. |
Different outcomes of multiple sialadenitis involving the submandibular and zygomatic salivary glands in a Welsh Corgi dogCase ReportSY Park, JS Lee, HY Yoon, HE Kim, JH KimVet Med - Czech, 2022, 67(8):447-453 | DOI: 10.17221/174/2020-VETMED A ten-year-old indoor, castrated male Cardigan Welsh Corgi (Canis familiaris) presented with the chief complaints of chronic vomiting, retching, hypersalivation, and bilateral submandibular masses for two months. The systemic examinations, including serum chemistry, radiography, ultrasonography, and fluoroscopy, were unremarkable. A fine-needle aspiration revealed bilateral submandibular sialadenitis. Broad-spectrum antibiotics with phenobarbital were prescribed to alleviate the ptyalism. Thereafter, the left submandibular glands were normalised, and the right submandibular glands decreased to half their size. Three weeks later, the animal had an emergency visit because of a sudden left exophthalmos. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed enlarged left zygomatic and right mandibular salivary glands. The affected glands were surgically removed; the histopathologic examination confirmed non-septic sialadenitis, and the patient was finally diagnosed with idiopathic sialadenitis. Vomiting continued after the gland removal and the dog required a gradual increase in the phenobarbital dosage and an additional antiepileptic drug (potassium bromide) to manage the symptoms. The patient died eight months later from an unknown cause. This case report of bilateral submandibular sialadenitis concurrent with unilateral zygomatic sialadenitis in a Welsh Corgi dog suggests that when multiple salivary glands are involved, the response to anti-epileptic drugs and the prognosis is poor compared to that involving a single salivary gland. |

D) and a stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L. (UD)) extract were examined using histopathological and immunohistochemical methods in the stomach tissues of an experimentally created rat model of CD. The CD model was created using trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). The animals in the study were divided into control, TNBS, TNBS+Vit. D, and TNBS+UD groups. At the end of the experiment, the animals were euthanised and their stomach tissues were evaluated for necrosis, degeneration, apoptosis, and inflammation. Additionally, an immunohistochemical method was applied to determine the somatostatin (SSTR), aquaporin-1 (AQP-1), caspase-3, and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) immunoreactivity in the gastric tissues. In the evaluations, degenerative and necrotic changes and mononuclear cell infiltration areas were observed in the TNBS group, but such changes could be improved with Vit. D and UD applications. The results suggest that the combination of the Vit. D and UD extract may have a protective and therapeutic role in mitigating TNBS-induced damage to the gastric tissues, potentially through the regulation of SSTR, AQP-1, caspase-3, and TNF-α expression. This indicates a promising avenue for further research and the exploration of these compounds in the context of gastrointestinal health. |

It causes devastating viral diseases in small ruminants and has been rapidly spreading over various regions in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Although vaccination is thought to be an effective management strategy against PPR infections, the heat sensitivity of PPRV vaccines severely restricts their use in regions with hot climates. In this research, we studied the antiviral activities of ribavirin and aimed to understand the potential mechanisms of action of ribavirin in the African green monkey kidney cells (Vero cells). In brief, the adsorption, intrusion, replication, and release of PPRV, as well as the mRNA expression level of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), were significantly inhibited in the ribavirin-treated Vero cells compared to those in the PPRV-infected cells that were not treated with ribavirin. Additionally, ribavirin has potential as an antiviral drug against PPRV, and its antiviral activity is mediated by the Janus kinase signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) and PI3K/AKT pathways. |
