Vet Med - Czech, 2004, 49(12):447-452 | DOI: 10.17221/5738-VETMED
Hyperimmune sera against Shiga toxin Stx2e with antibody titres 8 000-32 000, prepared by immunization of slaughter pigs, were administered subcutaneously to piglets (n = 73) 3 days after weaning. The titres of Stx2e neutralizing antibodies in sera of piglets ranged from 16 to 512 following application of the immune serum. In most of the piglets, passively acquired antibodies disappeared during 4 to 8 weeks after application. The recorded serum titres were in all of the piglets 8 or higher fourteen days following administration. In another experiment, an immune porcine serum with antibody titre against Stx2e of 130 000 was applied subcutaneously...

Selective breeding of miniature pigs bearing cutaneous tumours resulted in the establishment of the MeLiM strain with hereditary malignant melanoma. The inheritance of melanoma was tested in a two-generation kindred comprising 456 progeny from 78 litters. Melanomas were recognisable visually as black-pigmented lesions on the skin. Their size, shape, number, progression and metastatic spreading varied widely. All possible melanoma forms known in human melanoma, i.e. pigmented naevi, dysplastic naevi, superficial spreading melanoma and nodular malignant melanoma, were found in the MeLiM pigs. Because the occurrence of nodular malignant melanoma segregated...

A cold complement fixation test (CFT) was used to identify C. abortus infection in ewes and does in northern Jordan. Sera from 36 flocks of sheep and 20 flocks of goats were collected randomly. The results showed that 433 (21.8%) out of 1 984 ovine sera, and 82 (11.4%) out of 721 caprine sera, were seropositive for C. abortus infection, as indicated by a titre ≥ 1:40. However, all the tested sheep flocks and goat flocks (100%) revealed at least one seropositive animal. There was a strong association (P < 0.05) between the rate of C. abortus infection and the size of the sheep flock, when larger flocks had higher...

Vet Med - Czech, 2004, 49(12):467-472 | DOI: 10.17221/5741-VETMED
The effect of three different anaesthetics, 2-phenoxyethanol (0.6 ml/l), Propiscin (0.75 ml/l)and clove oil (0.033 ml/l), on adult tench (Tinca tinca L.) of mean body weight 260 g (66-583 g), of both sexes was tested at four different water temperatures (17.9; 20.4; 22.6 and 25.1°C). The time periods necessary for the induction of particular characteristic phases of anaesthetisation and recovery were evaluated. At all temperatures, the statistically longest induction of anaesthesia (p < 0.05) and longest recovery (p < 0.01) were registered with Propiscin. With clove oil and 2-phenoxyethanol, the time period necessary...
Uterine prolapse in a purebred Arabian mare: a case report

Vet Med - Czech, 2004, 49(12):473-475 | DOI: 10.17221/5742-VETMED
A 17-year-old purebred Arabian mare was presented with a history of uterine prolapse of 3-hour duration. The case occurred just after expulsion of foetal membranes in a mare aborting during the 7th month of pregnancy. During treatment the uterus was replaced to its normal position following epidural anaesthesia. No vulval sutures were inserted. There was no vaginal discharge during the postoperative period. Rectal examination conducted 5 days later revealed that rapid involution of the uterus occurred.
