Enumeration of bifidobacteria in animal intestina samples

Vet Med - Czech, 2002, 47(1):1-4 | DOI: 10.17221/5794-VETMED

TPY agar supplemented with mupirocin (100 mg/liter) and glacial acetic acid (1 ml/liter) was effective in the enumeration of bifidobacteria in animal (11 species) fecal or intestinal samples. On the other hand, less than 50% of isolates from pig feces were identified as Bifidobacterium sp. using this medium. Subsequently TPY agar modified by the addition of mupirocin (100 mg/liter), glacial acetic acid (1 ml/liter), and colistin (25 mg/liter) was developed for the enumeration of bifidobacteria in pig feces. The results suggest that the bifidobacteria selective media should be chosen in respect of the animal species origin of the samples tested.

CD45RA and CD45RC isoforms expression in weaned pigs vaccinated with non-enterotoxigenic F4ac+ Escherichia coli strain against colibacillosis

Since no effective vaccine is available for its immunoprophylaxis, porcine post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD) induced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains remains an important cause of morbidity. Live attenuated oral vaccines have been suggested to be relatively effective in preventing ETEC-induced PWD in the pigs, but the mechanisms responsible for protection have not been elucidated. In the present study we have investigated the likely impact of oral vaccination of weaned pigs with non-ETEC strain expressing F4ac antigen on CD45RA and CD45RC isoforms expression on the surface of the mesenteric lymph node (MLN) cells and on spleen...

Effect of atrazine and zearalenone on the numer of receptor binding sites for 3H-estradiol in the rat uterus cytosol

M. Mitak, T. Gojmerac, D. Cvrtila, Ž. Cvetnič

Vet Med - Czech, 2002, 47(1):12-16 | DOI: 10.17221/5796-VETMED

The effect of a daily dose of 14 mg atrazine and/or 2.5 mg zearalenone that were administered to rats during 5 days of estrous cycle on the number of receptor binding sites for 3H-estradiol in uterine cytosol was investigated. Comparison with a control group of animals showed no effect of atrazine influence on the number of receptor binding sites for 3H-estradiol in the rat uterine cytosol until day 6 of the experiment, when a significantly lower value was recorded (P < 0.05). In the group of animals administered zearalenone, a decline in the number of receptor binding sites for 3H-estradiol in uterine cytosol was observed. On day 4 of...

Respiratory burst in neutrophilic granulocytes of carps (Cyprinus carpio): cytometric studies

M. Stosik, W. Deptula, K. Wiktorowicz, M. Trávníček, K. Baldy-Chudzik

Vet Med - Czech, 2002, 47(1):17-20 | DOI: 10.17221/5797-VETMED

Present studies aimed at flow cytometric analysis of respiratory burst in neutrophilic granulocytes in carps, at various stages of their ontogeny. Cytometric evaluation of the repiratory burst in PMN cells of carps demonstrated augmented values of the mean fluorescence channel of PMA-stimulated PMN cells, as compared to the value of the fluorescence channel noted for PMN cells which were not activated or did not respond to activation in response to the applied stimulator. Intensity of the fluorescence, compared to the mean fluorescence channel of the cells which were not stimulated by PMA, was most pronounced in 11- to 21-month old carps, average in...

Phagocytic and bactericidal activity of blood thrombocytes in carps (Cyprinus carpio)

M. Stosik, W. Deptuła, M. Trávniček, K. Baldy-Chudzik

Vet Med - Czech, 2002, 47(1):21-25 | DOI: 10.17221/5798-VETMED

The studies aimed at monitoring development of phagocytic and bactericidal activity in carps in the course of their ontogenetic development. The studies were performed using the techniques described by Mantur et al. (1986a, b), adapted to fish. Results were expressed in thrombocyte phagocytic index (Ipt), percentage of phagocyting thrombocytes (%tp), percentage of ingested bacteria (%bp) and in the index of intracellular killing by thrombocytes (Ibt). Number of thrombocytes was also examined using the technique of Dessi. Results of testing thrombocyte capacity to ingest the standard Staphylococcus aureus 209P strain showed that Ipt...

Vet Med - Czech, 2002, 47(1):26-31 | DOI: 10.17221/5799-VETMED

Numbers of food animal carcasses classified as capable for human consumption (edible), capable for processing (conditionally edible) and condemned belong among important parameters of health status of animals both on farm level and at slaughterhouses. The figures relating to these parameters were monitored at slaughterhouses during the periods of 1989 to 1994 and 1995 to 2000. Relative numbers of food animal carcasses classified as edible increased during the period of 1995 to 2000 in comparison to the period of 1989 to 1994 in different species as follows: in cows from 77.14 to 79.48%, in heifers from 83.06 to 92.49%, in bulls from 89.62 to 95.52%,...
