Fallow deer (Dama dama) are the most common breeding species among farmed cervids in Poland. Monitoring the animals' health, nutritional status, and welfare are highly important aspects in their breeding. Haematological variables are important indicators for comparing the physiological status of the animals and for monitoring the changes in the organism related to the adaptation to the breeding conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the day's length and the total protein content in the diet for the farmed fallow deer on the selected haematological variables. The study demonstrated a significant decline in the mean corpuscular...

The poor state of health and increased mortality rate of young roe deer, as reported by South Moravian hunters, caused by the increasing numbers of adult nematodes in the lungs of roe deer prompted us to identify the parasites using a combination of morphological measurements and a phylogenetic SSU rRNA analysis. The study was conducted in a 294 ha game reserve in South Moravia, Czech Republic. Molecular and morphometric techniques were used to identify adult nematodes collected from the respiratory tracts of nine 4-5 months old roe deer in poor health (low body weight of 3-4 kg, poor haircoat quality, and, in some cases, symptoms of diarrhoea). The...

Glaesserella (Haemophilus) parasuis is a part of the normal flora of the respiratory tract of pigs. However, under certain conditions it can also induce severe systemic disease with high morbidity and mortality leading to gross economic losses in the pig industry. The most prevalent serovars in pig herds in the Czech Republic are the virulent serovars 1, 4, 5 and 13. The currently available commercial vaccines are inactivated vaccines with certain limitations, such as no or poor cross-serovar protection. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to construct a subunit vaccine with a crude capsular polysaccharide extract (cCPS) isolated from...

The resistive index (RI) is an indirect measurement of arterial resistance by means of a ratio between the peak systolic and end diastolic velocities recorded with a spectral Doppler device, especially used to evaluate the vascular damage in ocular diseases such as glaucoma. Some ocular variables such as the intraocular pressure (IOP), the choroidal thickness, the axial length and the ocular blood flow may be influenced by physical exercise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the exercise on the RI of the medial long posterior ciliary artery in dogs, and correlate the data obtained with the IOP values. Ten clinically healthy...

Two dogs were admitted for the diagnosis and treatment of neoplasia (a hepatic and a mammary tumour, respectively), lethargy, quadriparesis and abnormal mentation with hypoglycaemia. The blood analyses showed severe hypoglycaemia (1.32 and 1.60 mmol/l, respectively). Although prompt treatment, including intravenous administration of dextrose, was initiated, the blood glucose concentrations were not restored to a normal range. After the diagnostic procedures, no aetiology other than the hepatic tumour identified by the abdominal radiography and ultrasonography, and a mammary tumour that might have caused the hypoglycaemia, were identified. Because there...

Four dogs had signs of pelvic limb lameness, pain, and collapse resulting from an occlusion of the distal aorta or the iliac arteries by thrombi. The diagnosis of an aortic thromboembolism was based on the absence or weakness of a femoral pulse, and the two-dimensional and Doppler ultrasonography of the abdominal aorta, iliac, and femoral arteries. Three dogs had a concurrent disease predisposing to thrombosis, including hyperadrenocorticism, protein losing nephropathy, neoplasia, and cardiac disease. Three dogs were treated with a tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) in an attempt to lyse the thrombosis; two regained pelvic limb function. The other...
