Vet Med - Czech, 2020, 65(5):191-198 | DOI: 10.17221/166/2019-VETMED

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a group of commensal microorganisms residing on the skin and mucous membranes of both humans and animals. Until recently, they have been regarded as non-pathogenic to livestock and companion animals, but since then, their clinical importance in veterinary medicine has increased with the discovery of their potential pathogenic roles in animals causing skin and soft tissue infections together with spontaneous abortions and mastitis. Scientific data concerning the presence of CoNS in North Cyprus are very limited. Therefore, the purpose of the study...

Vet Med - Czech, 2020, 65(5):199-206 | DOI: 10.17221/69/2019-VETMED

This study assessed the diagnostic performance of five field tests for ketosis in the blood, milk and urine in dairy cows. Samples were collected simultaneously from 102 dairy cows to determine the accuracy of the test results. The concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in the blood was measured quantitatively by using a portable ketone test kit. The milk and urine samples were analysed semi-quantitatively using different commercial test kits and urine sticks. The animals were categorised into a subclinical ketosis (SCK) and clinical ketosis (CK) group based on the BHBA concentration in the blood. The diagnostic performance of the milk and...

Dehulling effect of dietary administered white lupine seeds on the blood biochemistry of broilersOriginal Paper

Vet Med - Czech, 2020, 65(5):207-214 | DOI: 10.17221/27/2020-VETMED

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of the partial or complete dietary replacement of crude protein (CP) from soybean meal (SBM) with CP from the meal of whole (trial 1) or dehulled (trial 2) white lupine (WL) seeds on the blood plasma biochemical indicators in broilers. Chickens of the control (C) group were fed diets containing the SBM as the main protein source in the feed. It results from the findings that the complete and also partial replacement of CP from the SBM by CP from the meal of whole WL seeds in diets led to a decrease in the plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerides (TAG) levels (P < 0.001). Concerning the dietary...

Fluorescence biomodulation in the management of acute traumatic wounds in two aged dogsCase Report

Vet Med - Czech, 2020, 65(5):215-220 | DOI: 10.17221/131/2019-VETMED

Traumatic wounds represent a fairly common reason for the admission of dogs to a veterinary practice. In elderly patients, the management of wound healing can be challenging due to both the concurrent diseases and impaired physiological states, potentially resulting in delayed healing and chronic or non-healing wounds. The aim of this article is to describe an innovative therapy based on photobiomodulation (PBM) for the management of acute traumatic wounds with significant tissue loss in aged dogs. Two mixed breed dogs were presented with similar wounds in the...

Diagnostic imaging of a mass-shape hepatic steatosis in a dog treated with chemotherapyCase Report

N Lee, J Seo, J Kim, J Yoon

Vet Med - Czech, 2020, 65(5):221-226 | DOI: 10.17221/13/2020-VETMED

A left medial liver mass was found through the monitoring of the metastasis in a 15-years-old, spayed female Maltese dog. The patient had a history of chemotherapy with carboplatin after surgical resection of the mammary gland tumour. Ultrasonography (US) showed a massive hyperechoic mass in the left liver. The left medial liver mass was identified as a poorly demarcated, hypoattenuated area on the non-enhanced and all the phases of contrast-enhanced computed tomography. The liver mass was surgically removed and the histopathological examination showed a fatty deposition and no evidence of neoplasm. Based on the patient's history, diagnostic imaging...

Successful long-term management with toceranib phosphate of a recurrent muzzle mast cell tumour in a dogCase Report

HE Kim, JH Kim

Vet Med - Czech, 2020, 65(5):227-232 | DOI: 10.17221/78/2019-VETMED

A 10-year-old spayed female Yorkshire terrier with a muzzle mass was presented. The ulcerated mass was surgically resected, but recurred and grew rapidly over the subsequent 7 months. The submandibular lymph nodes were remarkably enlarged (right: 9.5 × 7.8 cm; left, 4.7 × 4.0 cm). The cytological analysis of the mass and lymph nodes revealed a high-risk mast cell tumour characterised by high mitotic figures (> 5/oil immersion field), nuclear pleomorphism, multi-nucleation, karyomegaly, and anisokaryosis. A polymerase chain reaction analysis targeting the c-kit domain revealed...
