The ovarian response to a standard chronogest + eCG treatment with plasma levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), thyroids, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), OH-butyrate (BHB) and urea-N (PUN) was studied in lactating Awassi ewes (n = 105) during the late-summer - early autumn transition period. The ewes were inseminated with diluted fresh semen after gestagen removal, and mated thereafter; 26 of them conceived at the fixed-time AI (fix AI; conception rate is calculated from lambing dates). Ovarian function was monitored by milk progesterone (P4) profiles. Before synchronization, the ovary was still acyclic...

BVDV control program in Austria - is a monitoring of the BDV status in sheep in Austria necessary?

R. Krametter-Froetscher, V. Benetka, K. Rasser, F. Tockner, G. Moesslacher, K. Moestl, W. Baumgartner

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):517-524 | DOI: 10.17221/125/2009-VETMED

In cattle referred to the Clinic of Ruminants at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna by local veterinarians from Lower Austria, the number of animals positive for antibodies against pestiviruses decreased from 11.9% in 2004 to 7.4% in 2007. In other Austrian regions the seroprevalence of 17.6% in 2004 dropped to 12.2% in 2007. The seroprevalence rates were considerably higher in older animals than in younger indicating a marked decrease of new infections (8.2% in < 1.5 years old animals, 6.8% in 1.5-4.5 years, 19.8% in 4.5-7.5 years and 33.3% in > 7.5 years). These data nevertheless also demonstrate that new pestivirus infections occur,...

The effect of a new probiotic preparation on the performance and faecal microflora of broiler chickens

J. Biernasiak, K. Slizewska

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):525-531 | DOI: 10.17221/3075-VETMED

The aim of the study was to examine the possibility of replacing antibiotic growth promoters with a new probiotic preparation. One gram of the preparation contains: 4.7 × 107 of LAB (Lactobacillus casei/paracasei LOCK 0920, L. brevis LOCK 0944, L. plantarum LOCK 0945), 2.0 × 103 of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae LOCK 0140) and a 50 mg of extract from Yucca Schidigera. The experiment was conducted on 99 female broilers divided into three groups consisting of 33 chickens, kept separately. A wheat- and soybean meal-based diet was divided into three parts: A (containing 1 g/kg of probiotic for starter and grower diets and 0.5g/kg...

Comparison of estradiol and progesteron serum levels in ferrets suffering from hyperoestrogenism and ovarian neoplasia

K. Hauptman, V. Jekl, G.M. Dorrestein, M. Vyskocil, Z. Knotek

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):532-536 | DOI: 10.17221/43/2009-VETMED

The aim of this study was to determine whether serum levels of 17beta-estradiol and progesterone are significant diagnostic tools for the confirmation of specific reproductive diseases associated with hyperestrogenism. Thirty-one adult ferrets (Mustela putorrius furo) were divided into five groups. The levels of serum 17beta-estradiol differed significantly when comparing females with ovarian tumors (817.80 ± 433.90 pmol/l) to intact (83.50 ± 32.53 pmol/l) and spayed, healthy females (73.17 ± 0.41 pmol/l) as well as to females with prolonged estrus (274.75 ± 192.40 pmol/l). Concentrations of serum progesterone differed...

The morphology of the circulus arteriosus cerebri in the ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus)

A. Aydin, Z.E. Ozkan, S. Yilmaz, R. Ilgun

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):537-542 | DOI: 10.17221/162/2009-VETMED

In this study, the circulus arteriosus cerebri of the ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) was investigated. Five ground squirrels were used as subjects. Coloured latex was injected from the left ventriculi of the hearts of all the squirrels. When the vertebral arteries of two of the animals were ligatured, it was found that there was no internal carotid artery. After careful dissection, the circulus arteriosus cerebri (the circle of Willis) was investigated. The right and left vertebral arteries gave rise to the caudal cerebellar artery before forming the basilar artery. The basilar artery formed the caudal communicans artery that was the...

Chondrosarcoma in the mammary gland of a bitch: a case report

G. Serin, A. Aydogan

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):543-546 | DOI: 10.17221/149/2009-VETMED

This report describes the clinical and histopathological findings associated with a mammary chondrosarcoma in a mongrel bitch. The tumour was located in the right caudo-abdominal mammary gland, and was 6 × 8 × 4 cm in size, weighed 200 g and was very firm to the touch. Microscopically, a well differentiated chondrosarcoma, rarely observed in canine mammary gland tumours, was diagnosed.

The importance of patient positioning for bronchial foreign body extraction: a case report

B. Pirkic, T. Babic, M. Stejskal, D. Maticic, D. Vnuk, M. Kreszinger, D. Stanin

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):547-549 | DOI: 10.17221/3074-VETMED

A bronchial foreign body was found in a dog. A circular foreign body was found radiographically in the left bronchus right after the bifurcation. A lateral thoracotomy was performed at the fifth intercostal space, guided by fluoroscopy. The positioning of the patient on the operating table can dislocate a movable foreign body, making the surgical extraction more challenging.

Teschen disease (Teschovirus encephalomyelitis) eradication in Czechoslovakia: a historical report

V. Kouba

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):550-560 | DOI: 10.17221/163/2009-VETMED

Teschen disease (previously also known as Klobouk's disease), actually called Teschovirus encephalomyelitis, is a virulent fatal viral disease of swine, characterized by severe neurological disorders of encephalomyelitis. It was initially discovered in the Teschen district of North-Eastern Moravia. During the 1940s and 1950s it caused serious losses to the pig production industry in Europe. The most critical situation at that time, however, was in the former Czechoslovakia. A nationally organized eradication programme started in 1952. That year the reported number of new cases of Teschen disease reached 137 396, i.e., an incidence rate of 2...

Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed: the semicarbazide notifications

K. Hruska, M. Franek

Vet Med - Czech, 2009, 54(11):561-564 | DOI: 10.17221/133/2009-CJFS

The recently instituted and easily accessible Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has been tested on the semicarbazid (SEM), the residue of veterinary antibiotic nitrofurazone, using the RASFF Database Portal launched in July 2009 by the European Commission. The database holds weekly overviews, published by the EU for 30 years from 1979 and offers a number of other possibilities, such as searching for subjects of notification, the date of notification, notifying countries and product categories, countries of product origin and distribution. There is no doubt that the new database portal is an important contribution of the European Union to...
