Vet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(3):97-105 | DOI: 10.17221/159/2009-VETMED

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the discriminatory power of ddl-PCR (D-alanin-D-alanin ligase PCR) and ITS-PCR (Internal Transcribed Spacer PCR) for accurate identification of enterococcal species in comparison with phenotypic assays. Results confirm previous published data that ddl-PCR simple approach allows rapid identification of two the most frequently isolated spp. E. faecalis and E. faecium. When identification points towards other enterococci then that mentioned above, the ITS-PCR seems to be suitable complementary assay. Correct identification of enterococci to species level is important because of different...

Characterization of two BHV-4 strains isolated in the Czech Republic

V. Fichtelova, K. Kovarcik

Vet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(3):106-112 | DOI: 10.17221/18/2010-VETMED

This study describes the isolation of bovine herpesvirus 4 (BHV-4) from the respiratory tract of animals suffering from respiratory disease. DNA of new isolates, CH and Ni, was cleaved with BamHI, EcoRI and HindIII in restriction enzyme analysis and the fragments were identified by co-migration with the restriction profile of the reference strain Movar 33/63 cleaved with the appropriate endonuclease. Typical profiles with polyrepetitive DNA (prDNA) fragments were detected. In order to localize the size variation within the obtained digestion fragments, Southern blot hybridization was performed. Differences between the isolates...

Uterine prolapse in cows: Effect of raising the rear end on the clinical outcomes and reproductive performance

M. Ishii, T. Aoki, K. Yamakawa, T. Uyama, S. El-khodery, M. Matsui, Y. Miyake

Vet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(3):113-118 | DOI: 10.17221/157/2009-VETMED

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of raising the rear end when replacing the prolapsed uterus in cows on the outcome and reproductive performance. A total of 76 cows with uterine prolapse were investigated, 10 of which had died before treatment. According to the posture, cows were divided into standing (Standing: n = 11) and recumbent (Recumbent: n = 55). Recumbent cows were subdivided randomly into lying (Lying: n = 24), lifting up using a cow-lift (Cow-lift: n = 18), and raising hind legs using a tractor (Raising: n = 13). Recovery rate after treatment of all cows was 60.6%. The recovery rate of Recumbent...

ESBL and AmpC beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in poultry in the Czech Republic

Vet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(3):119-124 | DOI: 10.17221/165/2009-VETMED

A major reason for resistance of Enterobacteriaceae to beta-lactam antibiotics is production of ESBLs and AmpC beta-lactamases. As their more detailed description in poultry is unavailable in the Czech Republic, the presented study aimed at assessing their occurrence and molecular characteristics. A total of 154 composite samples from broilers and 150 cloacal swabs from turkeys were examined. Production of ESBLs was detected in seven Escherichia coli isolates and AmpC enzymes in two E. coli isolates. The most frequent ESBL types were CTX-M-1 and SHV-12 and the most common AmpC enzymes were the CMY-2 types.

Vet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(3):125-132 | DOI: 10.17221/127/2009-VETMED

The purpose of this work was to evaluate hydrocephalic ventricular changes using three quantitative analysis methods. The height, area and volume of the ventricles and brain were measured in 20 Yorkshire terriers (10 normal and 10 hydrocephalic dogs) using low-field MR imaging (at 0.2 Tesla). All measurements were averaged and the relative ventricle size was defined as a percentage (percent size of the ventricle/size of the brain). The difference between normal and hydrocephalic dogs was statistically significant for the average of each ventricle as well as for the percentage value. Five hydrocephalic symptoms were identified: circling, head tilting,...

Molecular typing of Mycobacterium bovis isolated in the first outbreak of bovine tuberculosis in the Azores Islands: a case report

F. Matos, A. Amado, A. Botelho

Vet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(3):133-136 | DOI: 10.17221/137/2009-VETMED

Twenty Mycobacterium bovis isolates from a first reported outbreak in the Azores Islands were differentiated into four spoligotypes: SB0119 (45%), SB0121 (40%), SB1264 (10%) and SB1090 (5%) and into two MIRU-VNTR allelic profiles using eight selected loci. The isolates seem to constitute a clonal lineage from a common source of infection. The limited diversity among the analysed Azores strains isolates could be due to the close contact of animals and use of common pastures and all herds can be seen as one epidemiological unit. The population structure of these strains with its low diversity differs from the Portugese mainland indicating...

Upper eyelid and medial canthus reconstructive surgery after histiocytoma resection in a dog: a case report

M. Lew, S. Lew, A. Rozicka

Vet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(3):137-143 | DOI: 10.17221/69/2010-VETMED

A six year old crossbred male dog presented with non-pigmented, pale pink, unhaired, ulcerative tumor of the medial canthus and upper eyelid region. As treatment, surgery was proposed. During the surgery complete excision of the tumor was performed. The extent of skin loss, especially in the upper eyelid required plastic reconstruction by pedicle flap transposition. The soft skin of the cheek was chosen as a graft donor site. The postoperative period proceeded without any complications and ended with successful engraftment. The soft cheek skin did not impede movement of the upper eyelid. Histopathological examination indicated histiocytoma and tumor-free...
