The Khuzestan province in south-western Iran is the centre of Persian Arab horse breeding and training. The present study was aimed at determining the prevalence of Theileria equi in the equids of this province. A total of 165 blood samples from healthy Persian Arab horses from twenty four stables were examined for the presence of T. equi infection using molecular methods. For detection of T. equi, primers targeting the 18SrRNA gene were selected. The PCR method gave 47 (28.5%) positive results. Age (P = 0.68), sex (P = 0.88), contact with cattle (P = 0.26) and type of activity (P = 0.06)...

Vet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(9):415-423 | DOI: 10.17221/7681-VETMED

This study was aimed at evaluating the effects of different concentrations of the dietary plant extract supplement YGF251 (young growth factor) on growth performance, blood profiles, relative organ weight, nutrient digestibility and meat quality in broiler chickens. A total of 640 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chickens with an average initial body weight of 40.25 ± 0.5 g were randomly allotted to one of four treatments lasting four weeks with 10 replicates per treatment and 16 chicks per replicate pen. Dietary treatments consisted of: CON (basal diet); YGF0.05 (CON + 0.05% YGF251); YGF0.1 (CON + 0.10% YGF251); YGF0.15 (CON + 0.15% YGF251)....

Chinese herbal medicine has been used as an anti-abortive treatment in farm animals for thousands of years. To investigate the anti-abortive functions and mechanisms of Bai zhu san (BZS) on mifepristone (RU-486)-induced abortion, pregnant mice were allocated to different groups as follows: control group receiving neither RU-486 nor BZS; mice receiving RU-486 only; mice treated with both RU-486 and BZS. The results showed that the concentrations of IL-10 and IL-4 in uterine lysates were significantly higher in mice of the BZS + RU-486 group compared with the mice of the RU-486 group. The IL-10 and IL-4 levels in serum were several folds higher than...

Vet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(9):433-439 | DOI: 10.17221/7683-VETMED

This study was aimed at assessing the histopathological and haematological effects of a widely used herbicide on rice paddy fields, i.e. butachlor, on rainbow trout. Fish were exposed to butachlor at a concentration of 0.39 mg/l, for a period of 10 days. Haematologically, fish showed a significant decrease in erythrocyte count, haemoglobin, white blood cells and lymphocytes and a significant increase in neutrophils compared to controls (P < 0.05). Histopathological observations of prepared sections of the treatment group also revealed pathological lesions of varying severity in studied organs, including liver (hyperaemia and haemorrhage,...

Effect of β-Glucan on cold-stress resistance of striped catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Sauvage, 1878)Original Paper

Vet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(9):440-446 | DOI: 10.17221/7684-VETMED

These experiments were performed to determine the effects of dietary β-glucan on stress responses of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). Fish were fed for nine weeks with a diet containing 0 (control), 0.5% (G1), 1% (G2) and 2% (G3 group) β-glucan. Subsequently, stress responses were studied by evaluating serum cortisol and glucose levels following a constant 24 h cold shock (from 28 °C to 15 °C). Serum cortisol and glucose concentrations were measured after cold treatments of varying durations (prior to, and after one, 12 and 24 h of cold shock stress, respectively). No differences in serum cortisol and glucose levels...

Vet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(9):447-452 | DOI: 10.17221/7685-VETMED

The first case of post anaesthetic myelopathy in a horse is described. A two year old 530 kg Shire stallion underwent surgical removal of a granuloma in the ventral sternal region under general inhalation anaesthesia in dorsal recumbency. Total duration of the operation was 85 min. The anaesthesia was uneventful except for profuse sweating and arterial hypertension observed during the whole period. During recovery the horse was not able to stand, and flaccid paralysis of hind limbs, absence of reaction to an induced pain stimulus on the hind limbs and no patellar or anal reflex was recorded; in addition, tail tonus was weak. Panniculus reflex was absent...

Vet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(9):453-456 | DOI: 10.17221/7686-VETMED

Herein, we report the histopathology of angiokeratoma characterised by non-invasive, proliferative, ectatic vascular malformations accompanying lysosomal dilation in the canine skin. Two cutaneous angiokeratomas were diagnosed in a six-year-old spayed female Pekinese dog. Physical examination of the skin revealed two small erythematous papules on the axillary and abdominal regions. The masses were approximately 2-3 mm in diameter, well-circumscribed, purple to red in colour, and slightly elevated above the skin surface. The two small masses had similar histopathological features, characterised by exophytic proliferation of a mixture of multiple vascular...

Vet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(9):457-460 | DOI: 10.17221/7687-VETMED

A six-year-old intact female Lagotto Romagnolo was referred with a two-day history of purulent vulvar discharge associated with fever, lethargy, polyuria, polydipsia and signs of abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a grass awn foreign body in the vaginal fornix. Culture swabs obtained from the vagina revealed the presence of Staphylococcus epidermidis as the preponderant organism. Ovariohysterectomy was performed, and the presence of the grass awn was confirmed. A chronic-active vaginitis was found at histological examination. The dog recovered with resolution of all clinical signs. Differential diagnoses for acute vulvar discharge...

Cryosurgery and electrocautery in treatment of transmissible venereal tumours in large breed dogs: a case reportCase Report

S.J. Choi, D.B. Lee, N.S. Kim

Vet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(9):461-465 | DOI: 10.17221/7688-VETMED

Five intact male group-raised Tosa dogs were diagnosed with transmissible venereal tumours. Surgical removal with electrocautery and a cryogun was conducted because the owner wanted to maintain the fertility of the dogs. The dogs were followed up for 12 months. The surgical wounds were completely healed by five to six weeks. The dogs remained fertile without complications or recurrences. To maintain fertility in dogs suffering from transmissible venereal tumours, the combination of an electrocautery and a cryogun is suggested.
