Vet Med - Czech, 2013, 58(12):605-608 | DOI: 10.17221/7178-VETMED
The present study was carried out to investigate the involvement of different bovine papillomaviruses in the teat warts of cattle. A total of 11 teat wart samples showing rice grain-like and small, sessile elevated greyish or flesh-like growths were collected from dairy cattle. DNA was extracted from these teat wart samples and PCR and real time PCR techniques were applied using specific primers for BPV-1 and -10 to detect the presence of viral nucleic acid. PCR revealed the presence of viral DNA of BPV-1 and -10 in three and seven samples, respectively. Quantification using real time PCR revealed that the copy numbers of the viral DNA of BPV-1 and...

Vet Med - Czech, 2013, 58(12):609-612 | DOI: 10.17221/7179-VETMED
The purpose of this study was to determine a nationwide seroprevalence of Fasciola hepatica in native Korean goats (Capra hircus coreanae). A total of 464 blood samples were collected from the three geographical regions (northern, central and southern regions) of the country between November 2009 and August 2011. Sera were separated from whole blood following standard procedures and analysed with an ELISA to detect antibodies against F. hepatica. The positive samples were further classified as mildly, moderately and strongly positive. Out of 464 goat sera samples assessed, five (1.1%) were seropositive. From these, three...
Echocardiographic assessment of right heart indices in dogs with elevated pulmonary artery pressure associated with chronic respiratory disorders, heartworm disease, and chronic degenerative mitral valvular diseaseOriginal Paper
T.C. Tai, H.P. Huang
Vet Med - Czech, 2013, 58(12):613-620 | DOI: 10.17221/7180-VETMED
The aim of this study was to evaluate right ventricular (RV) remodeling and right heart failure associated with different causes of elevated pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) in dogs. In total, 169 client-owned dogs with tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and 40 client-owned clinically healthy dogs were included. Dogs with TR were further categorised as suffering from chronic respiratory disorders (CRD), heartworm disease (HWD), mild/moderate chronic degenerative mitral valvular disease (CDMD), and severe CDMD. Among the echocardiographic indices of the right heart, no significant difference in the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion to aortic root...

Malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFHs), newly named as 'undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas' in 2002 by the World Health Organization, generally show an ambiguous origin. They have been described to fibroblastic or histiocytic in origin, while storiform-pleomorphic variants share a similar morphologic pattern with other sarcomas. For this reason additional diagnostic methods including immunology, ultrastructure analysis and molecular approaches are necessary for a more accurate diagnosis. We report three cases of MFH in individual dogs which presented histological characteristics of pleomorphic sarcomatoid tumours. Microscopic investigation, immunohistochemistry...

Vet Med - Czech, 2013, 58(12):628-632 | DOI: 10.17221/7182-VETMED
A four-year-old cross-breed and neutered bitch weighing 24 kg, was presented with vaginal bleeding for one month and a vaginal mass identified two previously. An ovariohysterectomy operation was performed at two years of age; however, mating subsequently continued. Vaginal bleeding and an irregular-shaped, oedematous vaginal mass (12 × 9 × 7 cm) were detected on clinical examination. The bitch also exhibited leukocytosis and erythrocytopenia. Abundant erythrocytes together with neutrophils, lymphocytes, intermedier cells and transmissible venereal tumour cells were observed in vaginal cytology. Abdominal ultrasonography showed cystic ovarian tissue...

Dermatophytes are infectious agents and can cause the zoonotic disease dermatophytosis in animals and humans. Keratinophilic fungi and especially dermatophytes can be detected on the hair coat and skin of cats. The aim of this report is to present a rarely seen dermatophytic skin disease in cats. Two Persian cats, living in the same house, were found to be positive for Chyrososporium spp. using mycological culture. At that time the owner of the cats was undergoing chemotherapy for a mammary tumour. This treatment led to low immunity, intensive pruritus and also to scaling on the inside of her arms. Chrysosporium spp. were also detected...

Vet Med - Czech, 2013, 58(12):637-640 | DOI: 10.17221/7183-VETMED
A three-year-old male western black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus molossus), which was refusing food and losing weight was presented with a swelling on the right side of the head below the eye. An abscess was suspected and treatment with subcutaneous enrofloxacin was started immediately. After identification of the causative agents as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and following susceptibility testing, enrofloxacin treatment was replaced with marbofloxacin, intralesional gentamicin/betamethasone treatment and gentamicin administered subcutaneously at an increased terrarium temperature of...

Vet Med - Czech, 2013, 58(12):641-644 | DOI: 10.17221/7184-VETMED
A two-year old male Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) was brought to the Surgery Clinic at the Istanbul University, Veterinary Faculty, Research and Practice Hospital, with a non-healing wound on the right upper eyelid. An ulcerated, bleeding wound was observed and diagnosed as an eyelid mass. The eyelid mass was excised and submitted for histopathological examination, which resulted in a diagnosis of meibomian adenoma. After excision of the mass, the right upper eyelid became deformed and adopted an abnormal shape. The surgical site was examined two weeks later. No abnormality was observed and the appearance of the right eyelid had returned...

A two-month-old male 40 kg Korean native calf was referred to the Chonbuk Animal Medical Centre, College of Veterinary Medicine, Chonbuk National University because of prolonged diarrhoea, depression, and anorexia lasting three weeks. On physical examination, abdominal distension presented in the right flank and a percussion sound was audible. A round-shaped lesion was observed in the area of the large intestine on computed tomography and ultrasonography, and a diagnosis of intestinal intussusception was made. A surgical operation was decided upon immediately to correct the intussusception. An infarct lesion was found during surgery, and the lesion...
